2019 Teacher of the Year

Stephanie Fisher is a southern California native who grew up in La Habra. Soon after graduating from La Habra High School, Ms. Fisher studied Nutrition at UC Berkeley, in addition to taking education courses that allowed her to volunteer with elementary-aged students. Her courses connected her with students from lower socio-economic backgrounds with the hopes that her efforts will help these students continue a path towards academic success and equity. Upon graduation from UC Berkeley, Ms. Fisher returned to southern California and received her Single Subject Credential in Science at Cal State Long Beach.

In 2005, Ms. Fisher was hired as a biology teacher at Warren High School in Downey, California. She later went on to teach Chemistry as well. In 2009, she joined the Warren HS AVID team, where she works closely with students aspiring for college and provides them with extra support. Ms. Fisher and the AVID Team are there for guidance, support, and whatever else they may need to reach their goal. This is a program that gets welcomed support from both our administration and our district (Downey Unified School District).

As a chemistry and AVID teacher, Ms. Fisher is driven by setting high expectations of herself and her students, cultivating a positive learning environment, and planning interactive classes and trips. For instance, she’s planned several SAT prep classes and the College Road Trip. With her efforts, AVID has grown from conducting six classes to fourteen classes per academic year; as a result, several first-generation students have received the proper support and guidance to prepare for their educational and professional futures. Her devotion to her school has allowed her peers to collaborate on and advocate for programs that provide high-quality education.

Her work has contributed to Warren’s 97% 4-year college acceptance rate. Ms. Fisher currently lives in Cypress, CA with her husband and three children. When not at school, she enjoys spending with family, trying new recipes, and enjoying them is one of her favorite ways to relax after work.
