AB 146 Celebration and Book Signing (12/19)
Assemblymember Cristina Garcia held a student assembly at Bell Gardens Elementary. In 2015, Ms. Hiatt’s 5th Grade Bell Gardens Elementary class submitted a bill idea which was chosen as a winner from Asm. Garcia’s There Ought to be a Law bill idea contest. Assembly Bill 146 was signed into law and went into effect on January 1st, 2016. It encourages that the “Mexican Repatriation,” the unconstitutional deportation in the 1930’s of over 1 million U.S. citizens and lawful residents of Mexican descent in California, be included in student history textbooks and studies. This is an important part of history that needs to be taught because it is important to so many people in California and to the millions of families that were effected. Elsie Guerrero, an author, wrote a book about this and offered to donate books and have a signing.
