(Downey) – Assemblymember Cristina Garcia (D-Bell Gardens) will be presenting AB 1561, a measure to eliminate taxes on tampons and sanitary napkins, before the Board of Equalization in hopes of gaining support for the legislation. Joint Author, Assemblymember Ling Ling Chang (R-Diamond Bar) will also be in attendance to give supporting testimony. AB 1561 is a bipartisan effort to end the “tampon tax” and bring gender equity to California’s tax code.
Assemblymembers Garcia and Chang are working to end this longstanding tax on women in California, an injustice that even President Obama discussed during a recent interview. Several states have repealed the sales tax on feminine hygiene products, recognizing them as necessary health products for women. In addition Canada has also banned sales tax on these essential items.
