(Sacramento) – Assemblywoman Cristina Garcia (D-Bell Gardens, whose district overlapped with Calderon's and was first to call upon him to resign, today issued the following statement in response to his request for early release from prison:
"Former California Sen. Ron Calderon needs to be kept in prison."
"It's bad enough that he walked away with a mere 42 month sentence when his crimes dictated 396 years. Granting his request for early release – after only serving seven months in a white-collar facility – is an added insult to my community and a void of justice in our democracy."
"As an elected official he was indicted on 24 felony counts, yet only plead to one. He's never even apologized for all of his crimes despite the fact that he pillaged the public of their trust for decades and got caught red-handed. I guarantee the crimes he committed will affect people much longer than any amount of jail time he will ever serve. Nonetheless, he should stay where he belongs; in prison."
