Menstrual Products Right to Know Act signed by Governor

AB 1989- Menstrual Product Ingredient Disclosure

For immediate release:

(Sacramento) – Assemblymember Cristina Garcia continues her work on menstrual equity with the signing of Assembly Bill (AB) 1989 Menstrual Product Ingredient Disclosure. AB 1989 will protect people’s health by requiring the disclosure of all ingredients in menstrual products including tampons, pads, cups, disks, sponges, and menstrual underwear.

“Consumers in California have a right to know what is in the products they will be using for over 40 years of their life, in order to protect their health.” Garcia continued, “My goal with this law is to increase the awareness of the toxic chemicals currently in our menstrual products. It was troubling at best to learn that products people rely on contain Phthalates, Bisphenols, Parabens, and PFAS/PFOA, which all have been found to be harmful to human health. Periods are not a luxury and people should have the knowledge to make safer choices.”

“I would like to commend Governor Newson on signing this common sense bill that will help protect the health of half the population who get a period. This law will require the most comprehensive disclosure for menstrual products in the world,” concluded Garcia.

The self-proclaimed period princess, Assemblymember Garcia will continue her work on the permanent removal of the Tampon Tax, and expanding free access to menstrual products in college and university bathrooms. In addition, Garcia will continue to work to build on menstrual equity, increasing access, and destigmatizing our biology.

Prior accomplishments of the Period Princess:

  • AB 10 (2017)-provides free menstrual health products in low income school bathrooms.
  • 2019 budget- removed the tax on tampons for 2 years until January, 1 2022.
  • 2020 budget- extended the removal of the tampon tax for 18 months until July, 1 2023.
