Statement on Schurr High School Re-Opening

For immediate release:

“I have been tracking the Schurr High School rodent situation and staying in communication with the Los Angeles Department of Public Health (LADPH), the Montebello Unified School District (MUSD),  the Montebello Teachers Association (MTA), and the California School Employee Association(CSEA) and will continue to stay abreast of the situation and stay engaged for next week’s final walk through inspection. Please be assured that LADPH and an independent third party inspected Schurr High School and concluded that the rodent infestation is abated. The air quality is good per the lab tests, and as a result of the clean-up and air quality testing results, industry and environmental safety experts have cleared the campus for a safe return. MUSD will continue to work over the weekend to implement LADPH’s preventative measures such as adding/upgrading door sweeps, re-patching holes, repairing water leaks, and clearing brush. Once all measures are addressed, LADPH will issue a public report on the entire scope of work that was conducted. I am happy to hear that LADPH, MUSD, MTA, and CSEA are working proactively together as they prepare for this Tuesday’s reopening to ensure the safety of all students and staff,” said Assemblymember Cristina Garcia (D-Bell Gardens).

The 58th Assembly District includes the cities of Montebello, Pico Rivera, Commerce, Bell Gardens, Downey, Norwalk, Bellflower, Cerritos and Artesia.
