Cervantes Statement on the Passage of Senate Bill 54

For immediate release:

(SACRAMENTO) – The following is a statement by Assemblymember Sabrina Cervantes (D-Corona) on today’s passage of Senate Bill 54 by the California State Assembly:

“I support the commonsense compromise reached by Governor Jerry Brown, law enforcement, and legislative leadership. The balance struck by the amendments to Senate Bill 54 exemplifies the best of Californian values. The bill protects both public safety and the rights of all Californians, regardless of where they come from.

“The bill enhances public safety by allowing local law enforcement to cooperate with their federal partners in pursuing criminal investigations and keeping dangerous criminals off of our streets. However, it also protects our immigrant communities and alleviates the rampant fear of families from being torn apart. I voted for SB 54 because it humanely and compassionately protects our neighborhoods."
