Assemblymember Cristina Garcia held a student assembly at Bell Gardens Elementary. In 2015, Ms. Hiatt’s 5th Grade Bell Gardens Elementary class submitted a bill idea which was chosen as a winner from Asm. Garcia’s There Ought to be a Law bill idea contest. Assembly Bill 146 was signed into law and went into effect on January 1st, 2016. It encourages that the “Mexican Repatriation,” the unconstitutional deportation in the 1930’s of over 1 million U.S. citizens and lawful residents of Mexican descent in California, be included in student history textbooks and studies.
