Cervantes Bill to Provide Environmental Justice Representation on the California Transportation Commission Approved on the Senate Floor

For immediate release:

(SACRAMENTO) – Today, Assembly Bill 179 by Assemblymember Sabrina Cervantes (D-Corona) was approved on the Senate Floor by a vote of 24 to 13. AB 179 would direct the governor to make every effort to ensure a diversity of professional experience on the California Transportation Commission (CTC), including experience working with or representing disadvantageous communities.

"Whether by bus, car, or bike, transportation has a profound effect on the quality of life for every Californian," Assemblymember Cervantes said. "The members of our Transportation Commission should reflect the changing reality of transportation in California. This should also include an understanding of how state transportation policy affects our most disadvantaged communities, especially as it relates to air quality."

The bill would also require the CTC and the California Air Resources Board to hold two joint meetings per year to collaborate on implementing state transportation policy.

AB 179 will next be eligible on the Assembly Floor for a concurrence vote on Senate amendments. More information about the bill can be found here.
