Governor Signs Cervantes Bill to Provide Environmental Justice Representation on the California Transportation Commission

For immediate release:

(SACRAMENTO) – Today, Governor Jerry Brown signed into law Assembly Bill 179 by Assemblymember Sabrina Cervantes (D-Corona). AB 179 will direct the governor to make every effort to ensure a diversity of professional experience on the California Transportation Commission (CTC), including experience working with or representing disadvantaged communities.

“Whether by bus, car, or bike, transportation has a profound effect on the quality of life for every Californian,” Assemblymember Cervantes said. “The members of our Transportation Commission should reflect the changing reality of transportation in California. This should also include an understanding of how state transportation policy affects the communities that are most affected by pollution, especially as it relates to air quality. I want to thank Governor Brown for signing Assembly Bill 179, and helping ensure that the voices of these communities are heard by the Commission.”

The bill will also require the CTC and the California Air Resources Board to hold two joint meetings per year to collaborate on implementing state transportation policy.

AB 179 will take effect on January 1, 2018. More information about the bill can be found here
