Cervantes Public Safety Legislation Signed into Law

(SACRAMENTO) –This week, Assembly Bill 1994 and Assembly Bill 2080 by Assemblymember Sabrina Cervantes (D-Corona) were signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown. Both bills were sponsored by Attorney General Xavier Becerra and will provide law enforcement with the information necessary to track criminal offenders.

• AB 1994 will require county jails to notify the Department of Justice (DOJ) within 15 working days when a registered sex offender has been admitted to or released from their custody.

• AB 2080 clarifies that local law enforcement agencies must provide data to DOJ on both the admission and release of criminal offenders within 30 days.

“I am grateful that the Governor has signed Assembly Bill 1994 and Assembly Bill 2080. It is unacceptable that neither law enforcement nor the public are notified when criminal offenders are released into our communities,” said Assemblymember Cervantes. “AB 1994 and AB 2080 will address the lack of complete and accurate data regarding the custody of criminal offenders and provide the information necessary to allow law enforcement to improve public safety and protect our communities.”

“The California Department of Justice must collect and report accurate data on criminal offenders to effectively protect Californians,” said Attorney General Becerra. “We applaud Assemblymember Cervantes for championing these critical public safety measures.”
