CORONA, CA – Assemblymember Sabrina Cervantes presented an $8 million dollar grant to the City of Corona on behalf of the California Department of Housing and Community Development. The grant was secured as part of the 2021-2022 State Budget, and will be used to complete critical renovations at the Las Coronas Affordable Housing Communities, Corona de Oro and Corona del Rey. These renovations will allow for the preservation of 232 affordable apartment homes for low- and very low-income families, as defined by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.
“Preserving our current stock of affordable housing is a critical component in solving our state’s housing crisis. Affordable places to live provide stability for families and create communities where children can grow and thrive,” said Assemblymember Cervantes (D-Corona). “I am proud to work with City of Corona Mayor Jacque Casillas, National Community Renaissance (National CORE), the Hope Through Housing Foundation, and Corona-Norco United Way to enhance the quality of life for the residents of Las Coronas in the 60th Assembly District.”
Corona de Oro and Corona del Rey is home to over 580 residents and is overseen by National CORE, a long-term owner and manager of cost-contained high-performance affordable housing communities. This $8 million State Budget allocation will be used for the critical rehabilitation of aging structures, asbestos mitigation, and plumbing infrastructure, which has subjected residents to ongoing repairs and water damage. In addition to the immediate critical health and safety issues that need to be addressed, National CORE is planning to update the apartment units with the mission of creating high-performance affordable housing communities for its residents.
“On behalf of National CORE and the residents we serve, I want to thank Assemblywoman Cervantes for her help and support in securing $8 million for critical renovations and upgrades at the affordable housing communities of Corona del Rey and Corona de Oro,” said National CORE President/CEO Steve PonTell. “This funding will preserve 232 affordable apartment homes at a time when our state is in the midst of a housing crisis.”
Mayor Jacque Casillas was also present to receive the symbolic check on behalf of the City of Corona.
“We are incredibly grateful to have such an effective leader in the Assembly who champions our community. Assemblymember Cervantes once again went to bat for us in the state legislature and delivered. Affordable housing is a big issue across the state. Here we have a real-life example of an elected doing it right - partnering with local organizations and local government to deliver the most impact and directly address affordable housing for residents in our great city,” said City of Corona Mayor Jacque Casillas.
