UC Riverside Medical School gets $25 million, can double size

UC Riverside’s School of Medicine received $25 million in ongoing funding in the state budget signed this week, which school officials say will allow them to double the number of doctors they train, from 250 to 500.

The expansion will be gradual, reaching 125 students in each upcoming class by about 2025 as hiring and building takes off. That will allow the school to help address the Inland Empire’s doctor shortage, said Deborah Deas, the vice chancellor for health sciences and dean of the School of Medicine.

Cervantes Denim Day Act of 2021 Approved by Assembly

(SACRAMENTO) – Today, the Assembly approved Assembly Bill 939, the Denim Day Act of 2021 by Assemblymember Sabrina Cervantes (D-Corona) by a bipartisan vote of 74-0. AB 939 would remove an existing provision of law that allows the manner in which a survivor was dressed to be admitted as evidence of consent in a sexual assault case.

Assembly Approves Cervantes Bill to Decrease Barriers to Stepparent Adoption

Today, the Assembly approved Assembly Bill 746 by Assemblymember Sabrina Cervantes (D-Corona) by a vote of 63-5. AB 746 will further reduce barriers to stepparent adoptions by clarifying that, in stepparent adoptions, the parties are not required to have been married or in a domestic partnership for a minimum period before the adoption.

Application Period Opens for $100 Million Hiring Tax Credit for Small Businesses

(SACRAMENTO) – Today, the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) has begun accepting applications for the Main Street Hiring Tax Credit, also referred to as the Small Business Hiring Tax Credit, which was established through the approval of SB 1447 (Bradford, Caballero, and Cervantes).
